WNBA All-Star center Brittney Griner is being detained by Russian authorities following an inspection of Griner’s luggage by Russian Customs Agents. According to reports Agents discovered vape cartridges containing hashish oil derived from cannabis. The smuggling charges come with a maximum prison term of 10 years.
Griner is a frequent visitor of the region. In the WNBA off-seasons Griner plays for the UMMC Ekaterinburg, a professional team in Russia’s women’s basketball league.
Griner’s agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas stated, “We are aware of the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia and are in close contact with her, her legal representation in Russia, her family, her teams…,” Colas went on to say, “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further on the specifics of her case…”
Resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a spokesperson for the WNBA told reporters that every player other than Griner has managed to leave Russia.
