TikTok has taken preemptive measures and implemented self-regulating policies before regulators imposed their own, in hopes a staving off much tighter restrictions.
Reports indicate TikTok, has made a number of policy changes and plans to install new features aimed at making the video platform a safer and more secure experience for younger users. This is in response to a U.S. senate hearing in which senators inquired about TikTok’s business practices, including the ever popular dangerous pranks, which are common with teenagers.
TikTok will install technology that uses “filter bubbles” more frequently to alert users of the mature content. These filters will be used to identify content that supports misogynic rhetoric and imagery.
In theory the revised policies sound like a good idea. However, how effect TikTok will be at regulating itself remains to be seen. In the past attempts by the video platform to prevent users from viewing misogynistic and transphobic content has not been very successful. On occasions the content was even aided by promotion form TikTok’s own algorithms.
