About That Job Interview, You Need To Make A Great First Impression

Job interviews can provoke anxiety in almost everyone, especially if you’re applying for your dream job and you know that competition for the position will be high. Research suggests that interviewers form their opinions of potential employees within just three seconds, giving you an extremely limited amount of time to make a great impression. Once the interviewer has formed an opinion about the kind of person you are, it can be almost impossible to reverse their judgment, so it’s essential to make those first three seconds count.

Preparation

Arriving on time for your interview is crucial for showing a potential employer that you are punctual and reliable, but many people underestimate the amount of time it can take to reach their destination. If the journey would normally take 20 minutes, set out 50 minutes before your appointment time and give yourself a 30-minute buffer, as this will allow for obstacles, such as traffic jams, public transport delays and parking problems. Always try to arrive a few minutes early, as you may need to pass through security check points or navigate through a complicated building.

Appearance

A potential employer will look at the way you present yourself and the clothes you wear to determine if you are a good fit for their company. Dress appropriately for the situation and the job position you are being interviewed for. A suit or other formal attire is usually the most appropriate option for an office or corporate environment. However, if you’re applying for a job at a contemporary club frequented by young people, the interviewer may be looking for someone with their own individual style. Tidy hair, clean fingernails and a close shave or well-groomed facial hair are all essential for making a good impression.

Confidence

Projecting an air of confidence in yourself and your abilities is crucially important if you want to convince the interviewer that you are the best person for the job. Body language is the key to creating a confident impression. Posture can speak volumes about your personality, so take some time to practice standing, walking and sitting straight, with your head held high and your shoulders relaxed. Eye contact, a warm smile and a firm handshake are also important for projecting a confident image.

Calmness

Anxious or jittery interviewees are likely to make the interviewer feel uncomfortable, so it’s important to create a calm and relaxed impression. A certain amount of anxiety is normal and expected at a job interview, but if you feel excessively nervous or show visual signs of anxiety, such as sweating or flushing of the face, try using some relaxation techniques before the interview. Calm breathing techniques, mindfulness, affirmations and visualizations can all be great tools to reduce anxiety.

An interviewer will form their impressions within the first few seconds of meeting you, and these impressions can be extremely difficult to change, particularly within the limited time available for an interview. Projecting the right image as you walk through the door is essential for creating a great first impression, so be prepared and exhibit confidence. Good Luck
