The bill was authored by Democratic representative and 2020 presidential candidate, Tulsi Gabbard and GOP representative, Don Young. They have titled it the “Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2019.”
Should the bill pass, marijuana would not be legalized in the U.S. Instead, states would implement rules at their own discretion for handling the drug. Young noted that the bill would allow the growing marijuana market in the U.S. to use federal banks.
Thus far, marijuana has been legalized in 10 states and Washington D.C. It is available to use for medical purposes in 30 states.
